Said Union Tourism Minister Chiranjeevi at a function organised to release the promos of ‘Toofan’, his son’s film
Actor-turned-politician Chrianjeevi, who was the chief guest at the trailer launch of Ram Charan-starrer ‘Toophan’, Telugu version of ‘Zanjeer’, on Monday, heaped praise on his son. The do also witnessed the presence of film’s leading lady Priyanka Chopra, director Apoorva Lakhia, producers Amit Mehra, actors Sri Hari, Tanikella Bharani and lyricist Chandra Bose,
Flanked by son, a delighted Chiranjeevi said, “If anyone asks about my achievements, I say that Charan is my biggest achievement. More than being a ‘Megastar’ and a Union Minister, I’m proud of being a father to Charan.
He overtook me as an actor. It took 13 years for me to do a Hindi film (Pratibandh) whereas Charan did it just three years after starting his Tollywood career. He has groomed his acting prowess, dialogue delivery and dances. I’m proud and envy him since he is reprising the role of Amitabh Bachchan with ‘Toofan’. It has all elements-action, social cause, etc. I see the trailer as a silence before storm. Priyanka is the centre of attraction at today’s event.”
Ram Charan said, “I did ‘Zanjeer’ remake because of Apoorva Lakhia. When he approached me at first, I was reluctant to do it as I was scared. I was also keen on not reprising Amitabh Bachchan’s role in my debut film itself. I told Lakhia not to touch iconic films and asked him to come up with a novel script. But it was he who persuaded me to do this film. After eight months, he visited me again and told me to forget it as ‘Zanjeer’ remake and asked me to listen to the script.
I was quite impressed but couldn’t say yes considering my apprehensions. It took three more months to convince myself before giving my nod. Later things just fell into place. And after Priyanka was on board, we never looked back. Considering that such opportunities are rare, I didn’t want to miss. In fact, my dad taught me to be bold to take up new challenges.”
Priyanka Chopra said, “‘Toophan’ is not my first Telugu film as I’ve done a Telugu film earlier ‘Apuroopam’ and also a Tamil film before. This is my south film after a long time. We shot for ‘Toophan’ in Hyderabad and I thoroughly loved working here. In fact, Chiru sir, Charan and Upasna looked after me.”
Director Apoorva Lakhia said, “Though we tried to make this ‘Zanjeer’ as different as possible, the storyline is just same as the original one. This is my interpretation and my tribute to original film as well as to Amitabh Bachchan. I’m glad that I’m debuting into Tollywood too with this film.”
Sanjeev Lamba, CEO of Reliance Entertainment, producer Amit Mehra, directors VV Vinayak, Vamsi Paidipalli, Koratala Siva, Mega brother Naga Babu, Bandla Ganesh and others were also present at the do.
On the sidelines, director Apoorva Lakhia said, “Sanjay Dutt is my inspiration and in fact, he was my senior in school. I share a special equation with him. I’m quite disappointed with the apex court’s sentence to Sanjay Dutt, though he has a great respect to Indian Constitution and Supreme Court. We are left with three days of shoot with him and we’ll do it once Priyanka adjusts her dates. He’ll start dubbing from Thursday.”
‘Toophan’ aka ‘Zanjeer’, is expected to release this summer.
