Hyderabad : The Andhra Pradesh Union of Working Journalists (APUWJ) has strongly criticised the stand taken by Telugu Desam Party (TDP) to boycott Sakshi daily, Sakshi TV and T News channels for ‘their partisan attitude’ in covering their news.
“It is quite unfortunate. Selective boycotting of media houses violates people’s right to freedom of expression exercised by the media on their behalf,” said the Union in a letter addressed to TDP president N Chandrababu Naidu.
“The concern expressed by the TDP is quite understandable, but the remedy is not boycotting the channels. Instead, it can take the recourse to the laws of land to get justice by approaching the Press Council of India or by approaching the courts of law,” APUWJ press release.
If TDP MPs, MLAs, MLCs and other elected representatives abide by the decision of the party leadership, they would be violating the fundamental right of their electors to freedom of expression and right to information, they said. Stating that this kind of action by a major political party like TDP was going to have repercussions on the democratic process in the State, the leaders urged the TDP chief to rescind the decision.
