Vijayawada: Janmashtami turned out to be a day of tragedy for Kanuru villagers near Vijayawada. Six boys, aged between 12 and 14, drowned in the river Krishna, when they went in for swimming as Friday happened to be a festival holiday.
The victims were part of a 10-member group that went to the river at Pedapulipaka from the village. While six of them got into the water, four were playing on the river bank. The six boys — Surya, Phani, Pandu, Yesupadam, Rathna and Ravi Teja — who were swimming started missing soon after. Noticing their friends’ disappearance in the water, the four boys who were playing with the sand began screaming for help but in vain.
As they could not help rescue their friends, the children rushed to the village and alerted the parents who darted to the river bank. The police engaged swimmers to search for the drowned boys. Four bodies have been found so far.
